Crossing the Nile with Joseph Campbell

Welcome to My Website

I served as Chair for twelve years and am now Core Faculty in the Mythological Studies Program at the Pacifica Graduate Institute, in Santa Barbara, CA. In the 1970s I traveled with Joseph Campbell in France, Egypt, and Kenya. I am the author of thirteen books and many articles on comparative literature and mythology. The links in the pages on this site will take you to the marvelous images I use in my lectures, and to which I refer in my articles and books: be patient, they take a while to download—but once you do, you will have an inexhaustible reservoir of archetypal images.

I have taught at colleges and universities in Switzerland, Maryland, Texas, and California, and am the recipient of awards for distinguished teaching and publication. In addition, I have lectured at the C.G. Jung Institutes in Küsnacht and New York, The Seattle Friends of Jung, the Modern Language Association, the American Popular Culture Association, the Ojai Writer’s Conference, the Pacifica Graduate Institute, and the Casa dei Pesci in Circeo San Felice, Italy. My edited volume of Joseph Campbell’s writings and lectures on the Grail Romances was published in 2015, and my edition of the letters of Joseph Campbell was published in 2021. I have conducted Mythological Studies tours focusing on the Grail mythologies in Northern France and Southwestern England and am currently planning a third tour in 2024.

Here are some of the images you will see on this site, an overture to the opera. The files reflect my life-long passion for dreams, mythology, literature, art history, and music, and they represent the materials I teach in my graduate classes at the Pacifica Graduate Institute. Enjoy!
